Chapter Four Results and Discussion  

This chapter presents the result of the study and makes discussions on it. Firstly, the new model of terminating strategy of current study is proposed based on the sample sorting results. Additionally, frequency of each strategy in Chinese marital conflict talk samples is displayed and terminating strategies are analyzed combined with examples. Thirdly,  distribution  of  terminating  strategies  is  presented  and  reasons  for  different strategy  using  frequencies  are  explained.  At  last,  gender  differences  in  using  these strategies are analyzed and explained.  

4.1 The New Model of Terminating Strategies of Marital Conflict Talk 

Based  on  the  previous  working  framework,  the  author  makes  research  on  the samples  collected  in  current  study  and  finally  establishes  a  more  detailed  model  of terminating strategy, including the following strategies: “withdrawal”, “frame-breaks”, “concessions”,  “compromises”,  “third-party  intervention”,  and  “objective  condition intrusion”.  Nine  sub  strategies  are  included.  The  new  model  is  presented  clearly  in Table 4.1. The new model is different from the working framework presented in Chapter Two in the following aspects: first, two sub strategies of “frame-breaks” strategy are found and classified based on the collected data, and they are topic-shift and joke; second, four sub  strategies  of  “third  party  intervention”  strategy  are  categorized:  interruption, suggestion, order and equivocation. Third, a new strategy is added, that is strategy six “objective condition intrusion”. The newly added strategy and sub strategies exist in the collected samples, which cannot be ignored.
