1.2 Objective and Methodology of the Study  
Oriented  to  the  practice  of  sci-tech  translation  between  English  and  Chinese  and EFL sci-tech writing, targeted toward the problems in the comparative study of English and  Chinese  sci-tech  texts,  the  present  study  attempts  to  compare  the  English  and Chinese  sci-tech  texts  in  terms  of  the  frequency  and  situation  of  their  use  of  passive constructions.  Roughly  speaking,  the  objective  of  the  present  study  is  three-fold.  In particular, the present study intends (1) To describe the differences between English and Chinese sci-tech texts in their frequency of the use of passive constructions; (2) To  describe  the  similarities  and  differences  between  English  and  Chinese sci-tech texts in their occasions of the use of passive constructions; (3) To  explain  the  causes  of  differences  between  English  and  Chinese  sci-tech texts in their frequency and occasion of the use of passive constructions. In order to achieve the above goals, the present study will be conducted under the guidance  of  the  common  views  regarding  the  difference  in  the  thinking  patterns between  the  West  and  the  East  accessible  in  comparative  cultural  studies,  linguistics and  translation  studies,  on  the  basis  of  the  existing  theories  about  the  differences between English and Chinese available in comparative or contrastive studies of the two languages,  employing  the  Scientific  American  and  its  Chinese  version  Huan  Qiu  Ke Xue  as  its  research  data,  and  through  a  methodology  of  theory-based  case  study integrating both quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Chapter Two   Literature Review  

This  second  chapter  will  provide  a  review  of  relevant  literature,  including previous studies of English and Chinese passive constructions in general and previous studies of English and Chinese passive constructions in sci-tech texts in particular, so as to reveal their achievements and limitations.  

2.1 English and Chinese Passive Constructions
