2.2 Previous Studies on the Translation of Frog
As mentioned above, until now there are few researches on the translation version of Frog. The author has searched in CNKI and only found one master’s thesis and eight articles discussing its translation. In addition, there are several book reviews found in overseas newspaper and on the Goodreads site. In the thesis Translation as Cognitive construal: A Cognitive Approach to the Translation of Frog (Wa), Nie Yuyi (2016) uses cognitive construal theory to study the English version of Wa. She analyzes the translation from five dimensions: scope, background, perspective, salience and specificity. As for scope and background, the author finds that when dealing with culture-loaded words, the translator will choose literal translation if the meaning of the semantic structure in the source text can be understood directly by target readers, and will choose liberal translation if not. Then she discusses three common perspective conversions and gets that the translator tends to choose the perspective which is to keep up with the usage habit of the target language. The dimension “salience” is analyzed from two aspects, one is profile and base, the other is trajectory and landmark. Specificity is observed through the translation of people’s name and onomatopoetic words, and the author finds that the translator has to make some adjustments, such as addition and omission, to express the source meaning precisely. In the paper Vivid Writing, Vivid Translation----Translation Evaluation of Frog, Yang Yanhong (2015) mainly explores how the translator conveys the feelings of the characters from the perspective of language style. Through a deep analysis of the choice of words and the arrangement of sentences, she concludes that the translation of Frog is as simple, smooth and vivid as the original work and successfully shapes various images of characters in the novel.
