Chapter Five The Translation Principles Elicited from the English Version of Frog
In Chapter Four, the author has taken great efforts to explore the major adaptations manifested in Goldblatt’s translation of Frog. In light of that this novel gets wide recognition overseas, this chapter is devoted to the translation principles elicited from the English version of Frog. Professor Meng Xiangchun (2014) remarks that Goldblatt is an example to sinologists who are devoted to translating Chinese modern and contemporary literature. So the author hopes that these principles can provide certain instruction to literary translation, especially the provincial novel translation.
5.1 The Observance of Accuracy
In translation, it is often the case that what a word expresses does not agree with what it actually signifies. So there are often two kinds of meaning, the literal meaning and the implicit meaning. Being aware of this fact, Howard Goldblatt often consults the writer when encountering something obscure. He says (2002) such a sentence in the article the writing life: “Well aware of the impossibility of a one-to-one correspondence between Chinese and English, he is always helpful in revealing obscure cultural and historical aspects of his work, and comprehends the unavoidable fact that a translation can only complement, not replicate, the original.” “he” refers to the writer of Frog—Mo Yan. In order to guarantee the cross-cultural communication goes well, the translator ought to translate the accurate meaning of the original text.

Conclusion
In the thesis the author makes an analysis of Howard Goldblatt’s translation of Frog within the framework of Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory and tentatively elicits some translation principles from the translated text. This chapter mainly includes three aspects: major findings, the limitations to this research and the suggestions for further study.
