The University of Sciences of Philadelphia (USP) struggles in following through with these ideas. They lack the buildings and businesses that may attract more people to come around throughout all times of the day. The campus is overall isolated and almost away from a lot of different sites and attractions. They have no forms of entertainment or shops which are of walking distance. Places to eat are limited for they are not in the best of locations. Their only means of activities and socializing is their McNeil Athletic Fields, in which there are tennis courts and a baseball field for students to play on. The campus is usually quiet at night with not much places open late and not much people out at those times of the hour. Overall, one can see from comparisons made that while the high densities and mixed occupancy are present in some areas, for the most part they are still deficient and have not yet been adapted in areas such as these Universities. In adapting these principles, the campuses along with the city as a whole would be more lively and safe for students and others to be active throughout all hours of the day.
The next principle she proposes is short blocks in which may seem like a small factor yet is very essential for a successful city environment. Short blocks provide the city with a variety of places people can turn without having to think twice about it. If the blocks are too long, streets may be isolated and forgotten. Long blocks have no ends to them and people are deserted when they use these areas causing them to feel unsafe. Short blocks give people more choices which allows for socializing, thus resulting in diversity. Short blocks also call for opportunities to build different types of buildings as mentioned earlier. This would cause the area to be more active thus providing more eyes on the streets at all times hence resulting in a safe environment. Long blocks, as she mentions, are meaningless because there are seldom any active reasons for anyone to use them. They are there just for the mere purpose of physical means and nothing more. In addition, to the short blocks she also explains how the city should have widened sidewalks on these short blocks in which would stop overcrowding of the streets. She explains how city sidewalks also serve as social function where people can meet and socialize.
At Temple this principle has once again been adapted. The blocks are very short with multiple buildings surrounding the area all throughout. No matter what hour of the day, there are always people outside and provides a safe environment for students to walk through. Every corner has a building and they are of all different sizes and styles. In addition to the short blocks there are widened sidewalks in which provide space for large crowds if necessary. The sidewalks are very useful for students are not forced into the street while walking to places such as their classes. At Drexel this concept is lacked with a majority of their blocks being long. The long blocks on the campus are mostly where all of their main class halls are located. For the few exceptional short blocks they have, they lack the surroundings required to consider本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
