1 This is a complicated assignment isn’t it – what’s it all about? The assignment is made up of a number of different and related tasks. There are two ideas behind the design of the assignment. Firstly, this is a form of enquiry based learning, where you have the freedom to choose something you are interested in understanding more deeply, have the autonomy to choose how you will research and investigate your chosen topic, and receive feedback along the way from your tutors and student peers as to what you might do better, what you could focus on next, and what sources of information might by useful to your inquiry. Secondly, although you hand in your work to tutors at specific times, as you read, research and develop your understanding of your topic more, you can re-visit the parts of your portfolio you have completed, and add to them, change them and re-write them before you hand in your completed portfolio in week 9.

2 So what is a portfolio? Basically, a portfolio is a big file, made up of separate sections, which relate to the task in this question, in this case the assignment brief. In your portfolio you will mainly have written sections, but you could include extracts from newspaper, magazines, photographs etc. which you may wish to refer to in the main written parts of your portfolio. You could create your portfolio electronically, which would allow you to put hyperlinks in to electronic sources if you felt this would be useful. We are not looking for hyperlinks to journal articles here – these can be referenced in your bibliography – but if you think links to news reports, specific web pages, You tube clips would be useful, then these would be acceptable. At the end of the module, you will need to submit both a paper version and electronic version of your portfolio.

3 What is an international trade and investment policy issue or dispute, i.e. what kind of thing should I be investigating? This is about getting started, and choosing something that you think is both interesting to yourself, relevant to the assignment task, and something that is feasible i.e. is there enough information out there on this topic? The starting point here is the definition of international trade and investment policy which is provided in the Powerpoint presentation in the first session – you need to “measure” your chosen topic against this definition; if you think what you have chosen is covered by the definition, that’s fine; if not, or you have further questions, then discuss this with your tutor.
