The last stage of computer-assisted language learning, the integrative CALL, is basedon two advances in technology: multimedia computer and hypermedia. What makesmultimedia even more powerful is the hypermedia technology, which means that themultimedia recourses are all linked together and that learners can navigate their own pathsimply by pointing or clicking a mouse. Teachers have moved away from a cognitive viewof communicative language teaching to a socio-cognitive view that emphasizes reallanguage use in a meaningful, authentic context. Integrative CALL seeks to integrate thevarious skills of language learning, that is, listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Theintegrative CALL can be regarded as a great advance in CALL activities.


Chapter Two Theoretical Basis of the Research


2.1 Constructivism2.1.1 View of constructivism
Constructivism is an important branch of cognitive theory. J. Piaget, a Swisspsychologist, was the first to advocate constructivism. In Piaget's view, intelligenceconsists of two interrelated processes, "organization and adaptation". People organize theirthoughts so that they make sense, sorting out thoughts and connecting one idea to another.At the same time, people adapt their thinking to include new ideas, for new experiencesprovide additional information. Learners take initiative to build or extend their knowledgeschema by either "assimilation", when the new information bridges gaps in agreement, or"acclimation" when the new information conflicts with the original version. Piaget's theoryof cognitive development proposes that humans cannot be "given" information which theyimmediately understand and use. Instead, humans must "construct" their own knowledge.Piaget stressed that human activity is a wisdom activity affected by cognitivestructures. Human knowledge is not purely objective, independent form, but constructed inthe process of interaction with the external environment. The process of the interactionbetween human and environment is the process of knowledge construction which can besummarized as two basic processes: assimilation and adaptation.
Assimilation refers to absorbing and integrating the information provided by theexternal stimulus into the original cognitive structure, which is the expansion of theoriginal cognitive structure and is a quantity change. Adaptation refers to undergoingrestructuring and transformation to the original cognitive structure in order to adapt andassimilate the information provided by the new environment and is a qualitative change.Individual cognitive ability is improved and developed continually in the circulating ofassimilation and accommodation from the relative balance to imbalance and then to newbalance.
