In order to acquire the correct andacceptable use of articles, the EFL learners have to memorize and practice thegrammar rules with great efforts.With respect to the significance the English articles have, enormous studies havebeen conducted on them from various points of views. Out of the studies, differenttheories on the English article system have been generated by the linguists both fromEnglish-speaking countries and other areas. Some of the theories may sharesimilarities, while some others may total contradictory with each other. In China,there are also many studies on English article system. Most of the studies were madewith purposes of interpreting and explaining how to use the English articles properly.The present study is a corpus- based study on misuse of articles. Our focus hereis the he errors committed by Chinese senior high school EFL learners. Based onCLEC and with the aid of the compute。

Chapter Two Literature Review

The background and the significance of the present study are briefly introducedin the previous chapter. In this chapter, the related theories as Error Analysis andcorpus linguistics will be reviewed, including definitions, developments, as well asthe significance of these theories. In the first part of this chapter, some recent studiesabout English articles system will be presented.

2.1 Related Theories of English Article System

2.1.1 A Brief Introduction of English Article System
In English, there are three typs of articles: the definite articles the, the indefinitearticles a/an and the zero articles  .The study of English article has a quite long history. It was firstly considered as“adjectives” in the early historical linguistic studies. Then it was classified into thecategory of “pronouns” in the beginning of the twentieth century. While in recentstudies, most of the linguists tend to classify articles into “determiners”. Thecontemporary studies are mostly set in the framework of grammar, semantics andpragmatics. In the present thesis, the study of the misuse of articles is mainly carriedout from a grammatical perspective and the affects of semantics and pragmatics willalso be taken into consideration.When we make a research on English articles, a reference frame based on thecategory and concept of nouns must be made since the articles are always appearedalong with nouns. Only by that can we identify the misuse of articles. English articlesare categorized systematically based on the notions of nouns such as number,countability and proper/ common. According to Quirk, Greenman, Leech&Svartvik,(1972), the usage of articles can be classified into three types: generic references,specific references and unique references. While for most linguistics, there are only two types of references for articles, namely, generic references and specific references.In the following subsections, specific explanations will be made for the genericreferences and specific references.
