摘要:The English written expression of college entrance examination requires the studentsto write a short passage of about one hundred and twenty words in thirty minutes.

5.1 Major findings
If the data analysis of the students’ compositions valuation and the data analysis of thequestionnaires for both students and teachers are considered together, the author can getthe conclusion that the teachers are not very sensitive to the cohesion device teaching andlack of relative knowledge storage, but there are big problems in students writing. Theproblems mainly about frequent use or misuse of pronouns, overuse and inappropriate useof the definite article “the”, overuse of attached items and the temporal devices, misuse ofconnective adverbs, prepositions, lexical items and wrong collocation. Halliday points out that “to judge a series of sentences is a discourse, depending onthe sentence and the sentence of coherence relations, is the coherence relation determinesthe text of a series of sentences. Harris also pointed out that “language is not a series ofwords in disorder, but by a coherent text form. English teaching should not only stay at thestage of the solution of single words, phrases and sentences. It is also need to study fromthe perspective of discourse analysis of sentence structure in the article.

Conclusion
From the research the author draws the conclusion of cohesive devices in students`writing ability has great relationship. Students usually have problems in usage of pronouns,the definite article “the”, attached items, the temporal devices, connective adverbs,prepositions, lexical items and collocations. The analysis of cohesion errors can improvestudents' writing ability. The premise is that teachers should have the basic knowledge ofcohesion theory and related teaching consciousness. Secondly, students should have theknowledge and ability of cohesion. The teachers have to do relevant guidance and trainingto improve students' writing ability. It is necessary and feasible.
