Chapter 2 Literature Review


2-1 The National English Curriculmn
The National English Curriculum is issued by the Ministry of Education in the fall of200L The arrival of the information age and the frequent international exchanges makeEnglish the international lingua franca. The United Nations pointed out in order to makea living in the 21st century; three kinds of basic skills are needed: have a goodcommand of their mother tongue, can speak a foreign language and acquire somecomputer skills. Due to historical reasons and the extensive use of the Internet, Englishhas become the main working language in the various international occasions, and hasalso become the main language in international scientific and technological meetings(according to the data, more than 85% of the international academic papers arepublished or read in English, and the other various disciplines' major academic journalsare also mainly in English), It's also the main application language of the Internet.Therefore, the advent of the knowledge-based economy , countries are strengthening theimportance of basic education in foreign languages,especially English teaching .The National English Curriculum is based on the new views toward the nature oflanguage like functional view and the international view and how language is leamtefficiency effectively such as cognitive theory, constructivist theory andsocial-constmctivist theory. There are six designing principles for the National EnglishCurriculum.

2.2 Theoretical rationale
The Affective Filter Hypothesis, proposed by Stephen Krashen, is one of the mostsalient theories in the field of Second Language Acquisition. Krashen is well known forhis five hypotheses on Second Language Acquisition (SLA). They are: TheAcquisition-Learning hypothesis; The Monitor hypothesis; The Natural Orderhypothesis; The Input hypothesis; The Affective Filter hypothesis, which indeed play aheavy role in Second Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Learning. TheAffective Filter Hypothesis makes a connection between affective variables and theprocess of SLA. Krashen claims that the affective filter is like kind of psychologicalobstacle or conscience hints which will affect one's acquisition of language. He holdsthat motivation, self-confidence and anxiety are the most important variables in theprocess of language acquisition. The affective filter is like a net. If the net is very dense,one has a strong filter and in turn less comprehensive input will pass through to theLAD. If the net is loose, one has a weak filter and in turn a large amount ofcomprehensive input will get into LAD. Those who have a high level of motivation,self-confidence and low level of anxiety will have a weak filter, and then with plenty ofcomprehensive input one would have high ability of second language acquisition. Onthe contrary, those who have little motivation,self-confidence and high level of anxietywill have a strong filter and in this case, one would have low ability of second languageacquisition.
