Following is diagram is adapted from the Balanced Score Card by Kaplan and Norton:Performance management can be used to improve team's performance. Team's objective is concerned with the targets to be met and the standards of working environment.
Work objectives are similar to individual objectives. They are devised to ultimately meet the organizational goals only. The organizational goals are divided into small scale goals and are driven by individual teams. These teams own specific responsibilities and targets. The team should be in complete agreement towards the work objectives set for them as they would be collectively playing a major role towards the organizational goals/missions.
Team working objectives targets on balancing team's strengths and weaknesses and the infrastructure to towards achieving the desired goals
It is extremely important for teams to define plans for achieving their agreed objectives. These plans should specify priorities, responsibilities, schedules, cost, means of measuring performance and progress on a regular basis, and assess feedbacks.
Improving Individual's Performance
At an individual level, Performance improvement can be achieved through motivation, communication, mentoring, increase learning through knowledge transfer sessions or training. Managers play an important role in motivating the individuals. Performance management provides a platform in the form of appraisal process using which Managers can achieve this. For each performance evaluation lifecycle, managers set specific challenging yet achievable goals to individuals. Individuals will then work towards achieving these goals.
Both manager and the individual would be responsible for a poor performance. To overcome this, both should work on identifying the root cause of the problem, understand the reason for poor performance, decide and act on the necessary steps to overcome this, monitor and provide feedback. Managers should help poor performing individuals' adequate resources in terms of training and guidance.
Tracking And Managing Performance
Managers should understand that Performance management is not a special or additional process (overhead) that has to be incorporated in the management activities.
