Current information systems often presentunsolicited and uncontextualized details which make it difficult to verifyand put information to use. An improvement in strategies for organizingand presenting information is required to reduce the dissatisfaction oftenfelt by even experienced information seekers. A great challenge today isnot necessarily to produce new knowledge, but to develop improved modesof working with and making sense of that which we already have.

One strategy to make more sense of a complex information space isinformation visualization, the visual presentation of information on aninteractive map. Visualizations take advantage of visual and spatial cogni-tive powers to reduce the cognitive effort required for processing complexinformation. The mapping of data parameters to location, colour, or formproduces images which can reveal objects, patterns and relationships whichremain undetectable when presented as lists or tables. Visualizations canideally be tools of thought and learning, extending cognitive processes byallowing active exploration of a knowledge space.
