The findings are expected to first highlight the significance ofthe appropriate use of interpersonal metaphors during the process of literary translation,which exerts a great impact upon the interpretation of the interpersonal meaning expressedin the source text. Secondly, the study also attempts to figure out the factors influencing thechoice of the translators in the process of translation, which results in different translationsof the same source text. Thirdly, this mode of analysis also provides some hints for futuretranslation practice as well as a new channel for translation assessment. It is designed tocombine quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis together and is supported by one ofthe most popular linguistic approach—systemic functional grammar, which guarantees amore accurate and convincing research result, and provide a new perspective for futuretranslation studies.The present study focuses on the following four questions:1. What are the similarities and differences in the use of interpersonal metaphors in the twoEnglish versions of Hongloumeng?2. What are the possible causes for such similarities and differences?3. To what degree is the interpersonal meaning of the original text represented in its twoEnglish versions?4. What implications can be drawn from the findings of the research?

 

1.3 Organization of the Thesis
The whole paper consists of five chapters dealing with the following issuesrespectively:Chapter one gives a brief introduction to the present study, including the backgroundand significance of the study, the purpose and focus of the study and the layout of theresearch paper.Chapter two looks through the historical studies of Hongloumeng and its differenttranslated versions home and abroad, particularly corpus-based comparative studies.Chapter three introduces the theoretical framework of the study. As interpersonalmetaphor and discourse analysis are two key linguistic concepts of the framework, thischapter will first illustrates the two respectively. Thereafter it describes the corpus andresearch methods that are going to be used in the paper.Chapter four is the core part of the paper. Data collected during the research will bepresented in this part, according to which similarities and differences of the use ofinterpersonal metaphors of the two versions by Yangs and David Hawkes respectively willbe generalized. Then sample discourse analysis is conducted to see whether the twoversions fully represented the interpersonal meaning of the source text or which one does abetter job than the other.Chapter five summarizes the whole study by concluding the major findings andfiguring out the implications of the study in translation practice and translation assessment.In the end, the author also points out the limitations of the present study and suggestionsfor further study.
