5.1 Major Findings
　　The research finds that the two English versions of Hongloumeng translated byHawkes and Yangs do differently from each other in the use of interpersonal metaphors,which exerts influence on the reconstruction of interpersonal meaning of the original text.The impact is in three ways in accordance with the three major differences made in 4.2 ofchapter 4:1. The mood and modality system used by Hawkes is more often than not differentfrom that of the original. Commands are more realized in interrogative or declarative moodthan Yangs's version, and so are questions more realized in declarative mood. With thisfeature, speeches made by the characters in the novel are more euphemistic and morepolite and as a result more easily accepted by English-speaking readers. Besides, flexiblechanges in mood are conductive to a vivid and more understandable portrait of personalityand social status of different characters in the novel and their interpersonal relationshipwith each other. This coincides with the research result gained by previous scholars thatHawkes' translation is more reader-targeted.2. Yangs’ translation basically confirms with the original in terms of the use of moodand modality system. Compared with Hawkes’ translation, Yangs’ employs moremetaphors of mood to realize statements in interrogative or imperative mood and questionsin imperative mood. Yang Xian-yi is a native –Chinese speaker and his wife Gladys Yangis English-speaking. Their perfect combination of efforts gives sufficient assertiveness andconfidence to their understanding of the original and finally birth to the English version ofHongloumeng. Such assertiveness and confidence is shown in the translation through theuse of a different mood system from Hawkes and in return a voice with much moreassertiveness and confidence can be felt when reading Yangs’ translation. Consequently,social status and interpersonal relationship among different characters are more sharplycounterposed and more explicitly depicted, and the personalities of different characters aremore sharp-featured. The accordance with the original text in the use of mood shows thatYangs pay more attention to the original text. Their aim of presenting western readers aHongloumeng with its original flavor can be clearly felt.3. In terms of modality, Hawkes' translation employs much more interpersonalmetaphors to express the probability of a proposition by using especially a large number ofexplicit subjectivity than Yangs'. The result is that the speaker overtly takes theresponsibility of the truth value of a proposition and thus the objectivity of the propositionis reduced.
