1-2 Purpose and significance of the study研究意义和目的
In recent years, there are two salient problems in the article use. The first one is thatlearners omit article when they should use it; the second is that there are partitive mistakesof substituting definite article the for indefinite afnj and substituting a(n) for ihe. Somescholars believe that such behaviour of second language learners (SLL) is the resultproduced by syntax and semantic feature which have no access to Universal Grammar(UG). Others, however, argue that article use of L2 controlled by a principle is regular,which just embodies the accessibility of semantic feature in the UG. The causes of this aredisputable among researchers, which include Article Choice Parameter (ACP), FluctuationHypothesis (FH) and Semantic Wheel Model (SWM). The research is aimed to explore therelationship between the use of English articles and four semantic contexts (Type 1 [—SR,+HK]. Type 2 [+SR. +HK]. Type 3 [+SR. -HK]. Type 4 [-SR. -HK]) in order to explorehow different semantic contexts influence the article use, and to help learners improvetheir performance on the English article system.The significance of this study lies in a new experimental approach employed in theexperiment: Use E-prime software in fill-in-the-article task to test articles' accuracy rateand reaction time. This is different previous research to investigate the accuracy rateof article use in the text. If the reaction time or processing time is shorter and accuracy rateof choosing articles is higher in certain semantic type, in this sense, it would provideevidence for the argument that it is easier to learn for L2 learners in this semantic type. Ifthe reaction time is longer and many errors are occurred, then it would be difficult For 12learners to learn in this semantic type. In addition, in the study, it may help to realize somepedagogical purposes and attempt to propose some pedagogical strategics which aresupposed to be feasible and practical in Chinese ting.

To be more specific, it reveals as follows:Chapter One presents the general introduction to the thesis, including researchbackground concerning three important theories in English article use and the purpose andsignificance of the study.Chapter Two covers the literature review of this research topic. First, it shows theclassification of noun phrase and definition of definiteness and specificity.
