Chapter One Introduction引言

1.1 Rationale
As a shining star in the literature, Shakespeare is a pilot master ofmasters of literature. His sonnets, or rather to be called the Sonnets play quitean important role in the history of literature. The study on the theme of theSonnets draws many an attention from a world of Shakespearean experts.Thousands of images appearing in the Sonnets, visibly or otherwise, have beenruminated. Different editions have been illustrated and the very era thatShakespeare belongs to over inspected. People try every means to discover thethemes in the Sonnets. Many a Shakespearean expert even studies the themefrom the perspective of biography,https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/  reading the Sonnets as a biography ofShakespeare. Various approaches above provide kinds of perspectives to thestudy on the Sonnets, enriching the sea of Shakespearean studies. They, however, are inevitably falling into empiricism which is subjective. Worse still, historical textual researches those Shakespearean experts have made are lackof best evidences, most of which are conjectured. Poems, however, are full ofmetaphors. Luo (2007: 285) believes that metaphors in the Sonnets areprofound as well as complex, in which mappings construct vivid cognitivefigures ...Shakespeare illustrates from various metaphors cognitive meaningsof themes concerning the universe, the time, eternity, love, the body, music ,harmony and so on. The author rereads the Sonnets in the perspective ofcognitive metaphors, giving up theoretical approaches of historicism which arelack of facts and evidences. The thesis analyzes 26 sonnets, from Sonnet 127 toSonnet 152. on the theory of conceptual metaphor and by means of parablerhetorical criticism. By the convincing data the author figures out. themes ofthe Sonnets is of logic and compelling.

Literature CriticismErotic metaphors appearing in the Sonnets drew attentions of critics in the18th century. Some of them were averse to the Sonnets just because of theseerotic metaphors. To name just a few, G. Carriers wrote in his work "Feel Sorryfor Child of Shakespeare" (Shu, 2002: 78), the images are hazy and ambiguous, the Sonnets are disgusting. G, Stevens also agreed and believed Shakespearewould not have gained such a brilliant reputation if he had not had his dramasand only had written the Sonnets. Not until late 18th century did poets as S.T.Coleridge, P.B. Shelly, John Keats and J. W. Goethe, namely, pay attention to theSonnets and highly praised the themes in the Sonnets. S.T. Cloeridge tried todefend for Shakespeare as the so called "erotic metaphors" were not sexual lustbut just a kind of a passion beyond friendship. He also thought it was popular inthat era to enjoy that passion. P. B. Shelly viewed the images in the Sonnets fullof passions and enthusiasm. John Keats also held that the Sonnets were no doubtbeautiful master pieces. In the 20th century, people began to take interest in theSonnets rather than Shakespeare's dramas. They regarded the Sonnets as thebeautiful version full of complex themes. Some critics who held negative viewstoward the Sonn论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
