Enlightened by their studies,people gradually recognize the feature of semantic unity and structural stability of phrasalverbs. All these studies provide us with a chance and a great resource to explore thesemantic potentials of English phrasal verbs within the framework of Systemic FunctionalLinguistics.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study研究目的和意义
Combining the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, based on the previousstudy on English phrasal verbs, this paper endeavors to explore the semantic potentials ofEnglish phrasal verbs, which is of both theoretical and practical significance.It has been generally accepted that language, as a social semiotic system, plays thecentral role not only in storing and exchanging experience but also in construing it.Halliday and Matthiessen (2008) put forward a semantic interpretation of the threecomponents of the "environment" of a grammar: a knowledge base, a text planner and acomponent specifying the writer-audience relationship. These three componentscorrespond to the three metafunctions of systemic theory, i.e., ideational function, textualfunction and interpersonal function.In their studies, Halliday and Matthiessen (2008) regard experience as a resource thatis a potential for understanding, representing and acting in reality. They interpretexperience as meaning that is construed in language and propose ideation base as aresource of construing experience. The phenomena of experience are construed andrepresented by the three semantic categories of ideation base: sequence, figure andelement. As a development of Systemic Functional Linguistics on discourse semantics,Martin and Rose (2003) propose the Ideation perspective, which is concerned with howour experience of "reality", material and symbolic, is construed in discourse.Although the general concern of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is ideationalsemantics, it also considers text generation. Halliday and Matthiessen (1999: 384) statesthat a text is generated within the logogenetic time-frame. In other words, logogenesis isthe process of meaning creation through an instantial system in the unfolding of aparticular text. Moreover, text generation, which is a perpetual research project, extendsthe scope of discourse analysis in Systemic Functional Linguistics. Thus, the analysis ofEnglish phrasal verbs leads to significant extensions to and elaborations of the SystemicFunctional Linguistics in text generation.By exploring English phrasal verbs from systemic functional perspective, thesemantic potentials and logogenetic patterns of English phrasal verbs are presented.Through the analysis, it is clear that we should have a comparatively good command ofthe construction and polysemy of English phrasal verbs, which would help us utilize itsuccessfully and comprehend the functions of different phrasal verbs in different socialand cultural context. Besides, a detained study of English phrasal verbs may result in abetter practice of language understanding, learning, teaching and researching.
