Communicative Functions of Euphemism in Public Speech

1.Introduction 简介

Euphemism is a common and universal linguistic phenomenon in the process of human’s language use. Euphemism is not only a kind of important means to construct and regulate interpersonal relationship, but also the existing way of it. Euphemism in English is originated from the Greek word “euphemismos”. In Greek, “eu-”means good or sounds good and “-phemism” represents “speech” or “speaking fame” and in combination euphemism means “words of good omen”.
Along with the progress of the society and the development of human civilization, euphemism has always been in the whole social speech communication process, and fully displayed its communicative functions. Generally, euphemism has a great effect on daily communication. It oils the human relationship and contributes to save face of communicators. Moreover, in public speeches, euphemism is confined to rhetorical speech, and therefore, speakers are inclined to resort to euphemism so that they can make those vulgar, stiff, harsh languages sound elegant, subtle and dulcet. Thanks to euphemism, it is easy for people to accept those things that are likely to make others feel embarrassed or unhappy.

Euphemism is not only a common linguistic phenomenon, but also a cultural phenomenon. From the perspective of language communication, euphemism essentially embodied in a kind of indirect speech acts, it has the power of illocutionary act. Euphemism is a common phenomenon, in the process of using human associations in different languages, different social levels, there are some specific means to express moderately, so people have attached more importance to euphemism.

Briefly, the environment and conditions of euphemism’s generation are very complicated, it is deeply rooted in the social life, and as the development of society, it has continued to develop and be constantly replaced, this could make language constantly changing. Some people think euphemism is hypocritical, while some others think it is a kind of "psychological needs". Although the euphemism has the function of dispelling derogatory effect, but this effect is often short-lived. With time going by, the original complimented euphemism will also have bad associations. Once such a negative connotation has been identified, people will look for a new euphemism. That is why English euphemism is always ever-changing.
