for a long time. During last decades,many researchers did a lot of studies about the transfer in the second language acquisition. Asto the attitudes towards language transfer, there are three main opinions. Some linguists’viewpoint about language transfer is positive and it should be used in the foreign languagelearning process. Some linguists believe that language transfer is negative and it should beignored, while others insist that language transfer need to be rediscovered and reevaluated.
However, when we talk about the effects of the first language transfer in the secondlanguage learning, we focus most of our attention on the negative one. Because of negativetransfer of mother tongue, numerous errors can be found in the process of the second languageoutput. Linguists and language researchers have studied language negative transfer for severaldecades. But they pay their attention to the process itself rather than to the language output justlike writing. As a part of language knowledge, writing is really an excellent mirror which canreflect the students’ ability of mastering English for it involves almost aspects about languageknowledge such as lexis, morphology and syntax. Because one’s English writing can reflectshis or her language level, some researchers always choose it as the researching object. Innon-English majors’ compositions, a lot of errors invariably appear again and again. Thus, it isnecessary for us to investigate errors in writing. One of the manifestations of language transferin second language acquisition is the occurrence of errors caused by native transfer of mothertongue. This idea was raised by Ellis in 1999. There are many errors in the second languagelearners’ interlanguage, whose types are numerous and frequencies are high. As for collegeEnglish teachers and learners in China, there are still some problems unsolved nowadays,which make them puzzled and confused, just as what the specific situation of English languagelearning in China is, how the non-English majors’ English writing is about, and what are thespecific solutions to those numerous errors in English writing. The reasons for the negativetransfer in language writing can be regarded as the following: The first one is that Chinesebelongs to the Sino-Tibetan and English belongs to the Indo-European language, in otherwords, they stay in different language families. Therefore, there must be a lot of Chinese wordswithout equivalents in English and the sentence structures are different between the twolanguages. The second one is that the oriental people and occidental people have differentthinking patterns and cultures. This shows that English language learners in China must beaffected by their inherent thought pattern when they are using English. The third one is thatChinese students regard English language as the foreign language, which cannot be used intheir daily life, and are unwilling to pay much attention to it.


Chapter Two Literature Review


Numerous second language teachers, researchers and linguists have discussed about theinfluence of first language transfer in the process of second language acquisition for a longtime. Language transfer is not only the abstract academic problem in linguistic field but also acommon problem in the foreign language teaching field.
