From primary school, junior middle school, senior high school, tocollege, institute and university, and even for some higher degrees such as Master and Ph.D., Englishis studied as a Foreign Language for our Chinese students. It is mainly studied in the classroom in atraditional and formal way.In recent decades, this style has been challenged and the public’s ideas have changedaccordingly. With the rapid development of the Chinese economy, more and more people arebecoming rich and they can afford the expenses of studying overseas. At the same time, moreeducation options are open to them. The College Entrance Examination (often referred to as“Gaokao” in China) is not regarded as the only and final one-way for them. They face moreeducation opportunities than ever before from many countries of the world including U.S.A, Canada,Australia, and United Kingdom etc.Thus, higher level requirements for English learning are put forth. English study cannot belimited to reading, writing, listening and speaking. Their integrated uses in a real environment areessential. “Can we speak English like a native speaker? Apart from in daily communication, can theEnglish we learned be used for Academic Purposes? Why I cannot understand them all, do theforeigners speak English? The English I studied in China is the real English? I have studied Englishfor many years in China, why I cannot follow them?” Puzzled by many such above questions, manyChinese parents and students have the idea that “English can be studied well only inEnglish-speaking countries.” “Study English, Go Abroad!” Such questions are very popular amongChinese students and parents. Study abroad seems to be the best way for the students to improvetheir English.
The writer has been working as an International Education Counselor for nearly 12 years andhas helped thousand of Chinese students to study in many English-speaking countries.
