1.3 Outline of the thesis
This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one briefly introduces the background andsignificance of this study, and provides the outline of the thesis.Chapter two reviews the theoretical background of the study. It first discusses thedefinitions, categories and relevant studies of semantic prosody. Then it discusses therelationship between semantic prosody and collocation. After that it introduces thesignificance of corpora in the studies of semantic prosody. Finally it discusses the approachesto revealing semantic prosody.Chapter three is devoted to the research methodology for this study. First the subjects andobjectives are presented, then research instruments and research procedures are listed.Chapter four presents the results and discussion of the study. The detailed statistics of thefour node words are presented, and the comparisons are made according to the statistics.


Chapter Two Literature Review


In this chapter, the author first gives a brief introduction to the theories concerningsemantic prosody and collocation, and then provides a comprehensive review of the studies ofthe semantic prosody at home and abroad. Then the author reviews the concept of corpuslinguistics concerning semantic studies. Finally, the approaches to semantic studies, i.e.data-based approach and data-driven approach are reviewed.


2.1 Definitions of Semantic Prosody
Since the introduction to the concept of semantic prosody by Bill Louw in 1993, manyscholars have devoted themselves to this field, and a great many defining schemes aboutsemantic prosody are introduced. In this section, the most popular and dominant four definingschemes are examined in turn.


2.1.1 Louw’s Definition
The term “prosody” is borrowed from Firth (1957). Firth uses it to refer to phonologicalcoloring which spreads beyond semantic boundaries. Bill Louw, however, coins the term“semantic prosody” and gives his own definition, “a consistent aura of meaning with which aform is imbued by its collocates.” (Louw, 1993)Firth is concerned with the way sounds transcend segmental boundaries. The exactrealization of the phoneme /k/, for example, is dependent upon the sounds adjacent to it. The /k/of “kangaroo” is not the same as the /k/ of “keep”, because during the realization of theconsonant, the mouth is already making provision for the production of the next sound. Thus the/k/ of “kangaroo” prepares for the production of /   / rather than /i:/ or any other sound, by aprocess of “phonological coloring”.
