1.1 Research Background
ESL写作,作为第二语言学习(听,说,读,写,译)的五个基本技能之一,长期以来一直吸引着相当大的关注学习者,教师和研究人员之间的。相比与其他四个技能,写作是更为复杂和更具挑战性,因为它表明一个人的综合能力,在使用的语言和表达思想。在二十一世纪,随着全球化和节约的快速发展,英语在国际交流中发挥着越来越重要的一部分。写作,作为一种通信手段,在外交事务中占有的重要组成部分。在我们的国家,越来越多的关注英语教学的进一步发展,改革和开放政策和国际交往日益频繁加剧。在20世纪80年代,英语写作作为一门课程被正式纳入国家教学大纲。即使从那时起,成为广大英语写作的研究已进行了提高学生的写作能力的目的。ESL writing, as one of the five basic skills in second language learning (listening,speaking, reading, writing and translating) has long been attracting considerableattention among learners, teachers and researchers. Compared with the other fourskills, writing is more complex and more challenging in that it demonstrates aperson’s comprehensive ability in using a language and expressing ideas.In the 21stcentury, with the fast development of globalization and economization,English is playing a more and more important part in international communication.Writing, as a means of communication, occupies a crucial part in foreign affairs. Inour country, growing concern about English teaching has been intensified by thefurther development of reform and opening policy and the increasingly frequentinternational exchanges. In 1980s, English writing as a course was officially includedin the national teaching syllabus. Even since then, a vast number of studies on EFLwriting have been conducted for the purpose of enhancing students’ writingproficiency.

College students are provided with moreopportunities to gain access to English application. Even college students are exposedto various English tests in which writing has been an integral and important part. Inthe standardized English proficiency tests such as College English Test 4 (CET4),College English Test 6 (CET6), and Test for English Majors Band 4 (TEM4), writingis 15%, 15%and 20% respectively. Therefore, college students are confronted withhigher requirements as to communicative competence in English, among whichEnglish writing turns to be the toughest task. In university level, English is a requiredcourse for all undergraduates, including both English majors and Non-English majors.For English majors, they are immersed in diverse courses concerning English; meanwhile, they are full-time learners. Additionally, writing is identified as anindependent course in curriculum for English majors, which would account for atleast two hours per week. In contrast, for non-English majors, English serves asmerely a subject among others. Four to six hours per week is allocated to Englishcourses, in which writing accounts for a small proportion. Plus, non-English majorsdo not have enough chances to practice English writing.College English writing teaching has been appealing to college English instructorsand researchers, and a variety of methods have been adopted aiming to teach Englishwriting more effectively. However, the effect is far from satisfactory. As a result, theissue of how to improve college students’ writing proficiency has become a focus anda tough task for college English instructors.
