Conclusion


English dictionaries play a significant role in English language learning and teaching.English teachers and learners use English words according to dictionary explanations. Therefore,many scholars have advocated that the information of semantic prosody should be included inEnglish dictionaries. However, many dictionaries fail to do so. Take the noun consequence as anexample. In Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (2004), consequence is explained assomething that happens as a result of a particular action or set of conditions. From thisexplanation, the negative prosodic feature of consequence cannot be found at all. However,according to previous studies, the word consequence bears negative semantic prosody; it usuallycollocates with unfavorable words such as fatal consequences, disastrous consequences, etc.Therefore, it is of great significance to include semantic prosodic features in Englishdictionaries, which is possible because of the availability of large corpora and computertechnology. The Collins CoBuild English Language Dictionary for Advanced learners compiledby John Sinclair, a linguist focusing on corpus linguistics and semantic prosody, is the firstdictionary which enables users to consult relevant information about semantic prosody.
