Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Motivation for the study
研究动机来自作家自己的经验,“他/她”滥用在中国英语学习者的英语口语。无论是作为一个学习者或ASA老师,笔者注意到了很多中国学生犯这样的错误。以下是取自作家之类的英语口语测试中的几个例子:
(1)...警察发现布朗夫人的家......诶......把他的祖父,但没有发现他的祖父......不......迷失了方向。她只是想累了,他就可以找到她家的路上。 (10:12:10-0:12:46)
(2)...先生布朗经常到公园...经常去的一个公园散步。有一天,他因为累了,问警察把她带回家。她累了,像一个笑话...(10:16:33-0:17:17)

The motivation for the study came from the writer’s own experience with themisuse of “he/she” in Chinese EFL learners’ oral English. Either as a learner or asa teacher, the writer noticed a lot of such errors committed by Chinese learners.The following are several examples taken from an oral English test in the writer’sclass:
(1)…The policemen found Mrs. Brown’s home…eh…bring his grandfather,but his grandfather didn’t find…no…lost the way. She just want to get tired, hecan find the way to her home. (10:12:10-0:12:46)
(2)…Mr. Brown often to a park…often go to a park for a walk. One day, he,because of tired, asked the policemen to take her go home. She tired, like a joke…(10:16:33-0:17:17)
(3) Mrs. Brown’s grandfather lived with…with her husband and her. Healways… he always go to the park in the morning. And one day, two…thepoliceman’s car stopped at Mrs. Brown’s house and said to her that his oldgrandfather lost his way and asked them to help. So they took the car…so theytake him to home…they take him home. Mrs. Brown is very surprised and asked her grandfather. He asked that: “How you lost your way? You always…you alwaysgo to the park in the morning, how did you can lost your way?” His grandfathersaid smiling that he didn’t lost her way, but he just got tired and wanted to take thecar to home. (30:04:05-0:05:30)
The examples are transcriptions from the recording of three non-Englishmajor college freshmen in a story-retelling oral test. The main characters in thestory are Mrs. Brown and her grandfather. When the story was read, no mistakewas made concerning “he/she”. However, when it came to retelling the story, allthe three students committed the same errors of using male pronouns when theantecedent is a female, or vice versa. In other words, the personal pronouns areinconsistent with the antecedent in gender. Similar errors appear repeatedly, whichattracted the attention of the writer.The distinction between “he” and “she” should be very obvious in gender:“he” refers to “(a) male person or animal mentioned earlier or being observednow”, while “she” means “(a) female person or animal mentioned earlier or beingobserved now (Hornby 1997:685, 1385)”.
