Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Introduction
This chapter will briefly introduce research motivation, research significance andthe thesis structure. The research motivation of this thesis will firstly be illustratedby expounding the existing studies and problems. Then the author of this thesis willdiscuss the research significance from three aspects. Finally, the thesis structure willbe briefly introduced.本章将简要介绍研究动机,研究意义和论文结构。本论文的研究动机将首先说明,阐述了现有的研究和问题。本文作者从三个方面讨论研究意义。最后,论文的结构将被简要介绍。


1.2 Research Motivation
英语,作为一门外语学习者在中国已经越来越多地成为企业和商业,科学与技术,国际关系和外交的“国际肥胖的语言。特别是随着中国加入WTO,英语的工作,在我们的日常生活中发挥着越来越重要的作用。在这种情况下,许多学校或大学英语课程已开辟了针对不同层次的英语学习者,教师提供机会,开始调查语言教学和学习过程。这些宝贵的经验,使他们能够理解英语作为外语(EFL)在中国。在引入中国的西方国家自20世纪80年代以来,不少理论相结合,语言学习和教学的实证研究开始涌现在中国的语言学家和语言教师。增加理解第二语言习得(SLA)的最明显的好处是它提供的语言教学以及语言教师形成一个清晰的画面如何有效教导。English, as a foreign language for learners in China, has increasingly become theinternational language of business and commerce, science and technology,international relations and diplomacy. Especially with China's entry into WTO,English is playing a more and more important role in work and in our daily life. Inthis situation, many courses of English in schools or universities have been opened upfor different levels of English learners, which offer teachers opportunities toinvestigate language teaching and learning process. These valuable experiencesmake them able to understand English as Foreign Language (EFL) in China. Incombination with quite a few theories in Western countries introduced into Chinasince 1980s, the empirical research about language learning and teaching began tospring up among Chinese linguists and language teachers. The most obvious benefitof an increased understanding of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is that it servesthe language teaching well and makes language teachers form a clear picture of howto teach efficiently.
However, most of the English learners, especially adults, often meet theproblems of language fossilization in their English studies, because of which they canhardly get obvious progresses as much as before. EFL teachers may discover thateven if they make efforts to improve English level in EFL teaching, they still find some difficulty in helping every learner to attain a desired goal, even at the collegelevel. Sometimes it proves to be a complete failure. This situation may make bothteachers and students themselves very disappointed. At the same time, we may alsofind different students of different levels slip into different embarrassing situation andthey have to depend on their teachers and successfiil learners in anticipation of gettingsome guidance. But the guidance or suggestions given may not be adapted to them.Especially, in such a mixed and large classroom, how to help students of differentlevels gain the most efficiency will be an important task.
Meanwhile, language teachers are often confused with some students’performance. They do work hard and do spend their time on English. Before theyare enrolled by college, they have already learned English for more than 5 years.But when testing their linguistic competence with testing papers, they still have lesslinguistic knowledge than they ought to have. Some learners' performances are sopoor that it is very difficult to match them with other students.
