摘要:The purpose of this thesis is to find out the status quo of the IELTS candidatesattitude towards the current oral English teaching in universities from thequestionnaire and to explore some ways to improve the oral English teaching inuniversities by analyzing the form, content, grading standard and features of IELTS.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Introduction
With the development of the economic globalization, China needs to developstudents who have the competence both with professional knowledge and Englishcommunicative ability. China has been a member of the WTO, which means anincreasing demand for intercultural communication between China and the outer worldand more and more international talents who are needed. English working as a tool isthe essential condition for those international talents to enter the international stage. Weshould examine the relationship between the demand of the changing market and theeducation from a dynamic point of view. English, as a significant tool for internationaltalents, entails timely and dynamic consciousness.Communicative language teaching has therefore in recent years become afashionable term to cover a variety of developments in syllabus design and, to a lesserextent, in the methodology of teaching foreign languages.With the development of intercultural communication, more and more peopleintend to study or live abroad. Thus, IELTS, TOEFL, GRE and other internationaltests have become more and more popular in China. IELTS is a cosmopolitanlanguage testing system and an essential condition to immigrate to or study inCommonwealth Nations or America. The immigration offices of BritishCommonwealth of Nations regard IELTS as the only standard to evaluate the Englishability of immigrates.

1.2 Background of the Study
IELTS is a test that evaluates comprehensively the communicative abilities of thecandidates in English with its emphasis on solving practical issues of listening,reading, writing and speaking by using English language as a tool. Therefore, IELTStest is able to reflect the capability of the candidates in comprehensive applyingEnglish. Because of its scientific testing ways, reliable results and the equivalencerelation to the actual English ability, IELTS is accepted by most Australian, British,Canadian, Irish, New Zealand and South African academic institutions, over 3,000academic institutions in the United States and various professional organizations. It isalso a requirement for immigration to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In 2007,IELTS tested over a million candidates in a single 12-month period for the first timeever, making it the world's most popular English language test for higher educationand immigration. In 2009, 1.4 million candidates took the IELTS test in over 130countries. In 2011 the number was 2 million. IELTS now enjoys the status of one ofthe most widely taken international English language proficiency test.There are four modules - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Thoughthere are distinctions between IELTS general and IELTS academic test, here is onlyabout the introduction of IELTS academic test from the Wikipedia.

2.1 Introduction
The concept of communicative language teaching has a wide range ofdimensions. It relates to all the aspects concerning teaching such as the contents ofteaching syllabus, the compilation of teaching materials and the design of testing andevaluation system. During the process of formation, communicative languageteaching absorbed many insights from different subjects like linguistics, psychology,sociology, philosophy and anthropology.
