Conclusion

This thesis makes an attempt to make use of Relevance Theory to interpret theeuphemism emerged in the film. As a common communication vehicle and rhetoricdevice, euphemism has been studied by many linguists at home and abroad for a longtime. Euphemism is a kind of tactful, vague and indirect means of expression to avoidoccurring some embarrassing situations, It is also an indispensable constituents inEnglish language, playing a crucial parts in the process of language forming,symbolizing the civilization of human being. Based on the information or researchescollected, this thesis tries to analyze and account for the process of generation andinterpretation of English euphemism emerged in film by using Relevance Theory.The conclusion of this thesis is how to interpret the pragmatic functions andapplication of English euphemism under the framework of Relevance Theory. Theauthor tries to use Relevance Theory to study the English euphemism, RelevanceTheory involve the concepts of ostensive-inferential, communicative principle ofrelevance, contextual effects and processing efforts, which can explain Englisheuphemism sufficiently. Through paying strenuous efforts, the author finds fourpragmatic functions of English euphemism within the theoretical framework ofRelevance Theory, in other words, four pragmatic functions have been found afteranalyzing the English euphemism by using Relevance Theory.
