Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background of the Study at Home andAbroad
Because Euphemism is a hot study topic for scholars, so many scholars haveadopted different perspectives to study euphemism at home and abroad.The lexical view:Many studies on euphemism from the view of lexical way, the resource of thecorpus are primarily from the compiling of dictionaries. These dictionaries list a largenumber of euphemisms, dating from the origin of euphemisms to explaining themeanings of euphemisms.A distinguished dictionary called Euphemisms and Other Double Talks,containing sapiential fruit which made by many British and American linguists overdecades. In this dictionary, Hugh Rawson traced back the history of euphemism,expounded features of euphemism widely and its definition, classification, and extentof use. He also described the meaning thoroughly and stated the etymology of eacheuphemism explicitly.Chinese scholars Liu Chunbao and Zhang Gonggui compiled A Dictionary of English Euphemisms and A Dictionary of Chinese Euphemisms separately. A briefintroduction to the meaning and etymology of English and Chinese euphemisms wereelaborately in these two dictionaries.The above description can offer something useful for linguists to studyeuphemism from the lexical view.

1.2 Problem of the Present Study
From the current studies on this topic, there exist limitation or problem indeed.As a matter of fact, relevance theory has great explanation power itself, however,as a matter of fact, a large number of the present studies are made on euphemism fromvarious approaches or angles, however, few linguists study euphemism in the filmEmma from the angle of Relevance Theory. The starting point of this thesis is the author's curiosity about the explanationeffects and power of Relevance Theory and the feasibility of the application ofEnglish euphemism in film Emma. There are three objectives of the study 1) Asmentioned before, there still exists some problems need to be worked out, the authorintends to make contributions to the unsolved problem more or less, therefore theauthor makes an attempt to analyze English euphemism in film Emma from the viewof Relevance Theory. 2) This thesis try to study pragmatic functions existing in filmEmma. 3) This thesis attempts to demonstrate the the feasibility of using RelevanceTheory to explain euphemism in film Emma.

2.1 Euphemism at Home and Abroad
Euphemism is a common phenomenon, people will adopt some specific languagemethods to deliver euphemistic expression in any different social organization andsocial level, which is already causing and attracting people's attention. A large numberof linguistic experts have studied the English euphemism for a rather long time athome and abroad. In China, many domestic linguists and scholars have made many great efforts onthe study of euphemism. From the point of rhetoric, Chen Wangdao studied theeuphemism from this angle, which not only refers to vocabulary, but also extends tosentence and discourse. In 1983, Chenyuan presented a book known associolinguistics, this book mainly makes an introduction to the social and culturalbackground of euphemism. Dictionary of English Euphemisms fulfilled by LiuChunbao, which mainly investigated euphemism in semantic way.
