People's life has been closely related to various information and people get accessto most information through journalism. In order to make news appealing to readers，news reports must deliver effectively the information in an interesting and concise way.Therefore, the stylistic features of journalism are extremely important to help thereporter or commentator to reach this goal. This Section presents the results of acontrastive study on the linguistic features of English news reports and commentaries.Based on Register Theory，this Section analyzes the field, tenor and mode of Englishnews reports and commentaries on the 10th anniversary of 9-11 event，with theanalytical tool of three metaftinctions in Systemic Functional Grammar. Data iscollected from websites of newspapers including USA Today, CNN, New York Times，U.S. News & World Report，and China Daily.This Section focuses on the analysis of corpus, involving the indicators of threevariables in news reports and news commentaries, and the exploration of threevariables. According to the figures, the author makes discussion and draw conclusionsto the contrastive Register analysis of news report and news commentary. Ten newsreports and ten news commentaries are selected as samples for the present research.(See Appendix 1-20).

Conclusion

With rapid social development，journalism has played a leading role in people'slife. Journalism also has a great influence on the language. This paper has conducted adetailed analysis of the two sub genres of journalism: English news reports and newscommentaries on current affairs. The author has made a comparative analysis of thesetwo kinds of journalism in terms of field, tenor, and mode the three variables ofRegister Theory, taking news reports and news commentaries about the 10thanniversary of 9/11 event as sample texts aiming to identify the linguistic similaritiesof and differences between English reports and news commentaries on current affairs.
