Chapter 5 Results and Discussion

The above chapters have done the preparation for the continuity of this chapter.Certainly, this chapter is the manifestation of the results and discussion, which is toevaluate the selected data from about 30 fashion magazines around the three proposedresearch questions. That is something like the raw material going through designedmeasures to conclude the types, features and functions of Chinese-English code-switchingapplied in the fashion discourse of fashion magazines and to get useful enlightens forfurther study. The following is to present the results and discussion.The second chapter, literature review, has made a list of types of code-switchingproposed by different scholars. Their exploration of classification has provided foundationsfor the analysis of the present study. According to Muysken’s Typology, the types ofcode-switching fall into insertion, alternation and congruent. The present study paysattention to insertional code-switching with different grammatical units, that is, differentforms of code-switching. Then, in terms of Myers-Scotton’ Matrix Language Frame Modeland Poplack’s proposition of code-switching types, the present study dividescode-switching into intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag code-switching. There arealtogether 530 cases of Chinese-English code-switching cases collected from the fashionmagazines of Bazaar, Rayli (Clothing and Make-Up), and ViVi, which are regarded as themain source of the given examples.Code-switching, a highly-developed system, consists of different types, which makethe linguistic phenomenon colorful and dynamic. The following is the division ofcode-switching types in this research.

Conclusion

It is true that the cases of code-switching have become more and more in our daily life.Code-switching, as a systematic linguistic phenomenon, has attracted attention of linguiststo explore it from different perspectives; and the achievements are distinguished andencouraging. However, most researches of code-switching are conducted in the field ofconversation rather than in written discourses. The present study is to evaluate writtencode-switching between Chinese and English in fashion discourses of fashion magazines.On one hand, the present study is to sum up types, to grasp features and to discussfunctions of Chinese-English code-switching employed in fashion discourses; On the otherhand, it is designed for getting the findings which may provide useful and meaningfulmaterial for further studies of the wide application of code-switching.
