Chapter Five Results and Discussions


5.1 Question One
As the contents mentioned in Chapter 4, based on large geographical area inSichuan Province, language research must consider the differences of dialectdistribution. It is reasonable and necessary to research the learning state of N and L indifferent dialect areas of Sichuan Province.But the traditional division in Sichuan does not consider sense of hearing andrhyme. The samples of this research cover most areas in Sichuan province, such aseastern part, southern part, western part, northern and middle part, and Chengdu, fiveareas in total. According to administration division map, Chengdu lies in the centralnorth part of Sichuan. In this article, we regard Chengdu as a single sample and we willcompare Chengdu and other dialect areas. Normally, a capital city in a province alwaysdominates in economics, education and culture. About phonological acquisition forEnglish language learner, is there any obvious differencess between Chengdu and theother Sichuan areas? In the following part, we will analyze this question based onresults of independent samples test in SPSS.

Conclusion


The negative transfer from N and L confusion in native language on Englishphonetic acquisition exactly exists in Sichuan districts, and such transfer is universalwithout district differences (except Chengdu).By analyzing the perception experiment results, something was found out: 1)subjects made the fewest mistakes when N and L place in the middle position; 2)subjects feel more difficult to perceive L than N when they are in the initial position of asyllable; 3) both N and L are the most difficult to perceive among three positions whenthey place in the final position. The third finding is contradictory to the general viewwhich holds that final lateral L is more difficult than final N because the letter neverexists in Chinese. The author made an explanation about such phenomenon in chapter 5.The findings for production are as follows: 1) the pronunciation condition of Nfollowed by vowel is obviously better than that of L followed by vowel. Thepronunciation is a little more difficult when N is followed by front vowel and backvowel than followed by central vowel, namely, the pronunciation brings fewestproblems when N followed by central vowel; 2) L followed by vowel, especiallycentral vowel, is influenced more seriously by negative transfer from native language;3) About consonant clusters, there are no inserting mistakes, but deleting ones, forSichuan English learners.
