4.Data Analysis of Pragmatic Functions of Pragmatic Markers in English Debate
4.1 The pragmatic functions of pragmatic markers in English Debate
Because the debate system has its own property, the pragmatic markers in it alsohave different contrast with other forms. In this paper we will focus on the followingtypes of pragmatics: 1) Additional markers such as: also, furthermore, moreover,besides, still, and, too, in addition. These markers mainly add new or moreinformation to the topic. 2) Listing markers such as: for instance, for example, such as.These markers usually appear in the middle of utterance to give example or evidenceto support the topic. 3) Contrastive markers such as: but, on the contrary, however, onthe other hand, nevertheless, yet. The markers always means the speaker deny theprevious proposition and give a totally new opinion. 4) Sequence markers: firstly,secondly, thirdly, next, in the first place. The kind of markers often appears in theopening presentation by the first speaker and the closing summary by the last speakerto give a logical and detailed explanation for their motion. 5) Conclusive markerssuch as: in summary, to sum up, in sum, in total. These markers are often in the initialposition of sentence to give a conclusion about the previous discussion.

Conclusion
Pragmatic markers are a common language phenomenon in verbal communicationand they can be found in many languages. In the past years, many scholars at homeand abroad concentrated on studying pragmatic markers from different perspectives.In this paper, the author focuses on the functions of pragmatic markers in the Englishdebate. Through analyzing the functions in utterances, we can find that pragmaticmarkers can make the utterance more logical and coherent. From the research, we getsome new findings in the current study. Firstly, according to analyze the statisticalresult we find that the top ten frequent pragmatic markers are not exactly the samebetween native English speaker and speakers with English as a foreign language. Wealso find that the students from China can use English pragmatic markers asfrequently as native English speakers, partly because of their high speaking level asthey can stand for the highest level among students. Secondly, we find both theaffirmative side and negative side can use pragmatic markers to organize theirlanguages, to express their intentions and to fulfill their purposes.
