5.1 Data analysis on the Chinese idioms in Selected Modern Chinese Essays

Based on the Chinese Idiom Dictionary, which contains Chinese proverbs, old sayings,two-part analogical sayings, idioms appeared in the four Selected Modern Chinese Essaysare identified and excerpted to the list 1 with their English translation. In total 16 idioms(except for Chinese four-character idioms) are found.Next, according to Chinese Four-character Idiom Dictionary, Chinese four-characteridioms in the four Selected Modern Chinese Essays are found out and shown in the list 2,which also with its original form on the left and their translations on the right.According to the six idiom translation strategies formulated in last chapter, all theseselected idioms are classified into the corresponding six types. The specific number ofeach type are shown below in Table 1. Note that in the following table, literal translation isshort for “L”, literal translation plus annotation is represented as “L+A”, communicativetranslation is “C”, “F” means free translation, an idiom translated with both literal and freetranslation is “L+F”, and an additional situation is an Chinese idiom is not translated intoEnglish for various reasons. Each of these translation strategies employed in SelectedModern Chinese Essays will his be discussed later in this Chapter.

Conclusions

This research focuses on the idiom translation strategies employed in the four SelectedModern Chinese Essays under the guidance of Conceptual Blending Theory. From theprocess of collecting idioms in these essays, it has been shown that there are large numberof idioms in these essays and they are translated through different strategies which are ofgreat value to research. By categorizing six idiom translation strategies employed in thefour collections of essays, it has been presented that free translation is the main strategyused by Zhang Peiji to translate idioms in modern Chinese essays. More over, literaltranslation, communicative translation and literal translation plus free translation are threeless employed strategies, while literal translation plus annotation and no translationseldom used. In terms of how these strategies are used, the Conceptual Blending Theoryprovides a feasible and reasonable explanation to analyze them in conceptual networks.According to the six categorized strategies whose conceptual networks can be classifiedinto four categories, namely, the frame network, one-slide network, two-slide network andno projection. It is shown in last chapter’s data and cases analysis that ConceptualBlending Theory can be employed to analyze idiom translation strategy in SelectedModern Chinese Essays from a new perspective, which belongs to the field of cognitiveresearch on language. From the case study in last chapter, a conclusion can be drawn thatZhang Peiji’s idiom translation are conformed to people’s cognition therefore Englishreaders are supposed to understand the Chinese idioms through their cognitive ability.Furthermore, this thesis choose to research on the idioms in modern Chinese essays, forwhich are paid less attention compared to other style of literature.
