sp;much  as  possible  after  the  teachers’  formal English  teaching,  reduce  the  time  of  language  attrition  and  avoid  making  some  unnecessary mistakes.  As  for  the  teachers  of  language  learners,  one  of  the  final  purposes  of  language teaching  is  to  make  learners  of  foreign  language  maintain  the  foreign  language  ability  a fter schooling  for  a  relatively  long  time.  Knowledge  about  the  language  attrition  would  benefit both the teachers and foreign language learners, since it would help us know how the attrition of  language  happens  and  how  to  reduce  the  degree  of  language  attrition.  As  from  education economic  angle,  it  can  make  a  positive  contribution  to  English  teaching  as  a  great  deal  of  money has been spent in learning English.

2. Literature Review 

In this chapter, the author mainly illustrates the literature relevant to the research about language attrition, studies on PPT acquisition and attrition both at home and abroad, as well as some theoretical hypothesis which are connected to language attrition. 

2.1 Studies on Language Attrition 

Language  attrition  was  recognized  as  an  academic  research  field  at  the  Conference  on the  Attrition  of  Language  Skills  which  was  hosted  by  Richard  Lambert  in  1999  at  the University of Pennsylvania. After the conference, some different items were used to define the phenomenon.  The  most  proportional  definition  was  that  it  means  gradual  disappearance  of language  skills  or language knowledge  in individuals  or  groups having the different  focuses. Concerning  the  study  of  the  phenomenon  of  language  loss,  many  terms  are  used  in  those papers  such  as:  forgetting,  change,  shift,  attrition.  Of  all  those  terms,  attrition  seems  to  be accepted by most researches in the field of language attrition. The  above  different  definitions  mostly  depended  on  the  researchers’  own  view.  As Yukawa  sum  up,  the  focus  of  language  attrition  can  be  on  following  aspects:  sociological aspect-the  causes  of  language  attrition,  linguistic  aspect-what  is  lost  and  psychological aspect-how  is  lost  (Yukawa,  1997).  Lambert  &  Freed’s  definition  is  an  inclusive  one  which covers all aspects (Lambert & Freed, 1982).
