2.2 Idealized Cognitive Model

ICM  is  a  representation  of  the  external  world,  while  it  is  not  totally  fit  in  with reality.  Therefore,  it  is  an  ideal  model,  which  is  combined  by  a  cluster  of  CMs.  As Lakoff(68) puts it, “we organize our knowledge by means of structures called idealized cognitive  models,  or  ICMs”.  And  according  to  his  opinion,  cognitive  models  have developed  within  cognitive  linguistics  and  derive  from  four  sources:  Fillmore's  frame semantics,  Lakoff  and  Johnson's  theory  of  metaphor  and  metonymy,  Langacker's cognitive grammar, and Fauconnier's mental spaces theory. Chapter Three Case Study

In this chapter, the author intends to use idealized cognitive model combined with background  knowledge  to  analyze  written  discourses  each  with  a  Chinese  and  English version.  Due  to  the  limitation  of  the  author’s  efforts  and  the  length  of  this  thesis,  the author does not plan to give spoken discourse coherence analysis. In this part, the author intends to use this model to analyze coherence with different genres of written discourse, which, as is known to us, mainly comprises poems, dramas, proses and so on. And this part will analyze these three literary genres.  

3.1 Coherence Analysis with Poems 
Poems,  as  a  traditional  type  of  literary  genre,  are  mainly  used  to  express  poets’ idea and emotion, reflect culture and life of their current society.
