Conclusion 

This  part  is  a  conclusion  for  the  whole  thesis,  and  it  is  arranged  from  the following three aspects: First,  major  findings  and  contributions.  With  the  development  of  cognitive science,  a  growing  accepted  conclusion  can  be  made  that  the  understanding  and explanation  of  language  should  comply  with  a  principle,  namely reality-cognition-language.  In  a  word,  language  is  related  to  interaction  with  the external under the guidance of cognition.Therefore, researches on discourse coherence can  not  be  conducted  from  linguistic  perspective  alone,  it  is  needed  to  transfer  to cognitive  perspective.  So  in  this  thesis,  the  author  intends  to  use  ICM  combined  with background  knowledge  to  analyze  discourse  coherence.  And  after  a  comprehensive study of ICM, both theoretically and practically, it can be found that: 
(1)  Combined  with  background  knowledge,  ICM  is  powerful  to  explain  discourse coherence  for  different  genres  of  discourses  and  different  languages.  Each  form  of discourse,  whether  it  is  Chinese  or  English,  it  can  be  analyzed  from  both  broad  and narrow senses.
