摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本文遴选了《咬文嚼字》杂志 2008-2015 年评选的“十大流行语”为语料,基于维索尔伦的语用顺应理论,聚焦于流行语的三个特性研究:变异性、商讨性和顺应性。

Besides, this thesis is to figure out the adaptation of mental world and the adaptation of social world in catchwords respectively.The former is the internal one, which includes pursuing of novelty, conformity and simplicity, and the latter is the external one that interweaved by political life, economic life as well as cultural life. Based on the research objectives, the present thesis aims to find the answers to the following questions: 1) What features of language adaptation did the catchwords present in the magazine Yao Wen Jiao Zi? 2) How did the catchwords in Yao Wen Jiao Zi realize their features of language adaptation? This research has both theoretical and social significance. Theoretically speaking, the findings of this study is hoped to certify the application of Pragmatic Adaption Theory. It is a good way to verify this theory by using Chinese catchwords as linguistic data. Chinese catchwords are the active part in Chinese, and these words are popular because of semantic extension and form derivation. Under this condition, words would have variable signifier or signified, or to say, changed form or changed meaning. Due to the great variability of catchwords, language selection in different contexts becomes possible, and then adaptation appeared. Besides, we can better understand dynamic of adaptation in environment of Chinese. Language development is naturally a dynamic process both in time and space, let alone catchwords. If we see from time, the locus of catchword is a parabola, while the situation would be like a dot diffusing all around if we see from space. For that reason, this thesis would be a good complement of this theory.

2.1 Studies of catchwords
Catchwordscan be also called popular phrases, fashion words or buzzwords. As a kind of humanistic phenomenon, they emerge with the development of economy and society. As for the definition of catchwords, there has not been a unified definition so far. Many scholars tried to define it in their researches. Among them, Yang Jiangguo (2004) said that catchwords are words, phrases and even larger linguistic structures that are produced at a certain point of time in
history, and are spread quickly and extensively for a short time in particular regions. Lu Yingke& Yang Wenquan(2006) said that catchwords are terms or words that are widely used by certain social groups at a certain period in certain regions. Li Mingjie (2014) thought that catchwords are selected and created; only those words and phrases that have semantic extension
