2.2 Studies of Adaptation Theory 

Adaptation  Theory  is  raised  by  the  Belgian  scholar  Verschueren  in  the  book Understanding  Pragmatics  published  in  1999,  in  which  he  has  proposed  “Pragmatic Perspective”, a new one investigating the use of language and provides new ideas for the whole construction of Pragmatics. Qian Quanlian (1990) is the first scholar who studied on adaptation theory at home.  In  the  article  On  Verschueren’s  Metapragmatic  Selection  published  in  1990,  he  has introduced Verschueren’s metapragmatic selection which is actually the prototype theory of metapragmatic awareness. And in the article Pragmatic: Language Adaptation—Review of Verschueren’s Pragmatics published in 1991, he has made a comprehensive introduction to the theory of linguistic adaptation from the aspects of “introduction to language adaptation”, “language adaptation” and “five aspects of language adaptation”.   His study in 2000 mainly concentrates  on  the introduction of the entireframework of adaptation  theory,  summarizing  it  into  three  subjects:  the  search  for  ananswer  to  the question—what  are  people  doing  when  using  language;  three  keynotions—variability, negotiability  and  adaptability;  four  angles  of  investigation—context,  structure,  dynamics and salience. In addition to Qian Guanlian, He Ziran is another scholar who has contributed alot  to  the  introduction  and  discussion  of  adaptation  theory.  In  the  article  Pragmatic Understanding:  Verschueren’s  New  Book  published  in  1999,  Professor  He  Ziran&  Yu Guodonghave  firstly  made  a  review  onpragmatic  theory,  then  systematically  introduced Verschueren’s adaptation theory and evaluated its advantages.
