Besides, itproposes an analytical process diagram about the dynamics of identity construction as thefoundation of analysis and illustrates its rationality and logicality by adopting a small-scaleinteraction from Verschueren.

Chapter Two Literature Review

The overview of researches and theories relevant to the study is stated in this chapter. Itstarts with a statement of theories about identity, in which it introduces the definition andidentity construction. Following the previous introduction, the dynamics of identity isconducted. On the previous related studies, the chapter summarizes and states with criticalthinking.

2.1 Identity and its dynamics
Before 16th century, the concept of identity was not mentioned until Taylor (1989)explained it as self-interpreting subject. After that, more and more researchers in various fieldsbecame interest in it. Many people think simply identity as the questions “who are you” or“who am I”. However, it is not easy to describe what identity exactly is.The traditional view states that “identity is rigidly fixed and exists outside of action; beingrather than becoming” (Omoniyi & White, 2006). It means that identity is the stable and uniqueself-hood and never changed, even it can’t rely on individual action.However, identity is not only a project of self; social factors are also needed to take intoaccount. “Identity is the social positioning of self and other” (Bucholtz & Hall 2005:586) and“attained a remarkable centrality within the human and social sciences” (Paul du Gay, etc,2000). Identity that constructed in specific interactive situation is a dynamic process andchangeable role, and it often adapts to the specific contexts and regards as conversationalstrategies of communicative intentions. The concept of identity has become an importantconcept in sociology field, it is related to role and category which reveals the relationshipbetween individual and social group in the society. So identity refers to the interpretation andconstruction of personal experience as well as social status in the context of culture, which is amember of a social group, and it is important for the members to have a very important role inboth emotional and value. And Hegel in 1807 first addressed that identity was a product of thesocial. Social identity refers to one’s self sense being in social status, like class, religion, gender.Howard regards identity as a product of discourse which is related to social practice andcustom. Erickson believes that the modern society is changing constantly, contradictorily anduncertainly, thus the identity crisis has been a typical crisis of modern people.
