It is necessary to probe into its philosophicalorigin, social construction can be regarded as one of its philosophical basis, which challengethe theory of existentialism that states: nature of the world is unchangeable, once changes,problem would be caused; people share the same essential characteristics which determines their social identity and status; people can not select or change their status which caused bynon-social factors. This theory holds the view that knowledge is a kind of historical andcultural definiteness, connected with the social process and social behavior, which is the fourpremise of social construction theory based on Gergen’s research. The key point of identityresearch is the construction process of discourse identity, which is constructed by people in theprocess of communication. In addition to these four premises, social construction theory alsoincludes the following aspects.Firstly, from the perspective of the relationship between language and identity, socialconstructionists believe that language is not only a tool for people to understand the world, butalso an organic component of social reality. Language is a dynamic form of social practice,which constructs social identity and social relations. Discourse, as one of the specific forms oflanguage, also has the function of identity construction.Secondly, about the relationship of power and identity, social identity exists in the power,and it is obtained by the power relationship. The identities of a particular individual or socialgroup are constructed by the description of historical, political, and cultural processes.Thirdly, putting the eyes on the relationship between discourse and self identityconsciousness, people rationally construct, maintain, enhance and protect their identities’consciousness through the descriptions and explanations of self identity conscious.
