1.2   Research Objectives 
This  paper  mainly  aims  to  identify  the  megametaphor  types  in  American presidential  inaugural addresses, investigate the  meaning construction mechanism of all  kinds  of  megametaphors,  and  discuss  the  functions  of  them  shown  in  the American  presidential  inaugural  addresses  by  means  of  quantitative  study  and qualitative study. To achieve this goal, fifty-seven  American  presidential  inaugural addresses are collected and the megametaphors in them are identified and classified. At  the  same  time,  based on Lakoff’s (1987) Idealized Cognitive Model  Theory,  the meaning construction of megametaphors in this corpus is expounded and afterwards the major functions of megametaphors in American presidential inaugural addresses are  explained  on  the  basis  of  the  meaning  construction  mechanism. To sum up, this thesis raises the following three research questions: (1) What kinds of megametaphors are  used in American  presidential  inaugural addresses?  (2) How are the meanings of megametaphors in American presidential inaugural addresses constructed?  (3)  What  are  the  functions  of  megametaphors  in  American  presidential inaugural addresses?

Chapter Two   Literature Review  

The following section mainly consists of three parts. In this first part, this chapter starts with a brief introduction of megametaphor. Then in the second part,  previous studies  of  megametaphors  by  scholars  at  home  and  abroad  will  be  demonstrated, while  in  the  third  part, this chapter proceeds with the illustration of previous studies on megametaphors in American presidential inaugural addresses. On account of these reviews, this thesis can be carried out with solid foundation. 

2.1   An Introduction to Megametaphor 
The past few decades have witnessed the rapid development of metaphor. During this period, a great  number of researches on metaphor were carried out and abundant results have been achieved. However, compared with the prosperity of the study of metaphor, the development of megametaphor is relatively lagging. As a matter of fact, megametaphor is the extension of metaphor and is closely related with it.
