2.2 Previous Studies of Megametaphors
The employment of megametaphor has a long
history both in China and abroad. For a long time, megametaphor has been considered as an effective rhetorical device. The study of megametaphor focuses on its features and rhetoric functions at first, and later it is placed in discourse to explore its practical application, epistemic functions and so on. In western countries, the first employment of megametaphor can date back to Homeric Age. Since then, megametaphor has arisen frequently in literary works. It is known to all of us that Shakespeare has an affinity to this means, so megametaphor gets the name of “the Shakespearean metaphor” (Berry, 1978). Even though the outcome of megametaphors in works is ample, the initial study of this topic starts quite late. It is the research of Werth (1994, 1999) that opens the door for the study of this topic. In 1994, Paul Werth realized that it is necessary and significant to carry out systematic study on a series of metaphors that sustain in a text, “I want now to look at another kind of extension, where a metaphorical field extends through an entire discourse” (Werth, 1994: 83). In consequence, he is the first to give the definition of megametaphor. He believes that “there may be an entire undercurrent running through a whole text, which may manifest itself in a large number and variety of single metaphors” (1994: 80). In addition, Werth also explores the notion of megametaphor by taking passages from E. M. Forster and Dylan Thomas. He contends that the concept of megametaphor actually results from the attention paid to the discourse level of language rather than the sentence layer. With Werth’s efforts, the nature of megametaphor is unfolded.
