5.1   Duplication  Forms  as  a  Key  Linguistic  Device  for  Politeness  in Chinese 
Leech  (1983)  proposes  in  his  politeness  principle  that  other  conditions  being equal,  try  minimizing  the  expression  of  beliefs  which  are  unfavorable  to  the  hearer and  maximizing  the  expression  of  beliefs  which  are  favorable  to  the  hearer.  It indicates  that  there  is  a  degree  in  politeness  expressions.  Both  mitigation  and reinforcement are required in politeness since pursuing interpersonal harmony is one of the main purposes of verbal communication. (Ran Yongping, 2012) Among  all  the  various  means  of  expressing  politeness  in  Chinese,  duplication forms take up a noticeably proportion and is discussed in the present study. Based on what is found in the present study, duplication forms in Chinese function as modifiers of linguistic expressions. Illocutionary acts as directives are imposing to the hearer. In Leech’s  (1983)  classification,  they  belong  to  the  competitives  in  which  the illocutionary  goal  competes  with  the  social  goal,  and  they  should  be  modified  to  a lower degree in order to mitigate the imposition. Duplication forms of AA and A 一 A usually  serve  as  downgrading  devices.  In  the  cases  of  the  convivials  in  which  the illocutionary goal coincides with the social goal, interlocutors tend to be cooperative rather  than  competitive  with  each  other.  The  strengthening  devices  also  take  up  a considerable  amount  in  convivials  in  order  to  reinforce  the  degree  of  expressions. AABB  and  ABAB  forms  are  the  most  commonly  used  devices  by  which  the intensifying  function  is  realized.  In  addition,  duplication  forms  as  a  grammatical device  indicates  the  change  of  ‘quantity’.  Thus  the  adjustment  of  ‘quantity’  is  the basic  grammatical  meaning  of  duplication  form.  (Li  Yuming,  1996)  This  is  the primary  reason  why  duplication  forms  can  be  modifying  devices.  Li  Yuming  (1996) suggests  that  there  are  mainly  four  subcategories  of  “quantity”:  quantity  of  object, quantity of number, quantity of action, and quantity of degree.
