Chapter Four Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Title Sequences in Wild China 

In  this  chapter,  we  set  out  to  analyze  some  pictures  selected  from  the  title sequences  of  Wild  China  firstly  from  the  perspective  of  representational  meaning, interactive meaning and compositional meaning under the guidance of Visual Grammar in  order  to  explore  how  multimodality  works  for  meaning  construction,  culture expression  as  well  as  attractive  effects.  In  the  latter  sections,  we  aim  to  make  use  of Zhang Delu’s complementary relation theory to probe an efficient way for the analysis of integration of multimodality. 

4.1 The English Documentary Wild China 

Wild  China  is  the  first  full  length  television  documentary  that  manifests  Chinese wildlife  and  humanities  landscape.  It  has  filmed  over  50  National  wildlife  refuges,  86 kinds of rare wildlife and different life stories of 30 nationalities, showing the “Unity of Man  and  Nature”  ideology  to  the  world.  This  TV  documentary  is  divided  into  six episodes,  including  Heart  of  the  Dragon,  Shangri-La,  Tibet,  Beyond  the  Great  Wall, Land of the Panda and Tides of Change, each of which strives to show unique humanist feature and ecological landscape in its own region. Episode  One  concentrates  on  south  China  where  rice  cultivation  custom  prevails.
