Therefore,  the investigation  of  company profiles  from  the  perspective  of  genre  analysis  and  appraisal  theory  is  of  great significance.  Firstly, we can sum up the moves and steps of company profiles first. Then detailed explanations  about  functions  of  each  move  are  given  and  attitude  resources  in  each move are also identified. Through this, we are able to achieve a better understanding of the  characteristics  of  moves and attitude resources in  company  profiles.  Besides, this is also  a  new  attempt  to  integrate  genre  analysis  and  attitude  theory  together  to  study discourse. It, to a certain extent, expands the use scope of these two theories  Secondly,  former  scholars  explore  company  profiles  mainly  from  aspects  of linguistic  and  translation.  However,  little  attention  is  drawn  to  study  the  use  frequency and  realization  ways  of  attitude  resources  in  the  move-steps  of  company  profiles. Therefore, the investigation of distribution and use frequency of attitude resources in the move-steps can give us deep and different insights.

Chapter Two Literature Review  

2.1 Genre and Genre Analysis
In  this  section,  concept  of  genre,  three  traditions  of  genre  analysis,  and  the concept  of  move  and  step  have  been  generally  introduced.  In  addition,  definition  of company profiles and its related previous studies are also contained to give you a better understanding of this paper. The word “genre” originating from the Latin word “genus” means a similar class, especially  a  group  of  animals  or  plants  that  includes  several  closely  related  species. Even  in  the  early  1970,  R.  Fowler  starts  regarding  “genre”  as  a  category  of  social communication activities. However, the concept of “genre” is first formally proposed by Swales  (1981).  After  his  proposal,  the  theoretical  framework  of  genre  and  genre analysis  begin  attracting  the  worldwide  attention.  Lots  of  scholars  have  further developed the research of  genre and  genre analysis.  And  various  opinions  are  declared on the definition of “genre”. Based on the study of Campbell and Jamieson (1978), Miller (1984:151), advances that “a rhetorically sound definition of genre must be centered not on the substance or form  of  discourse  but on  the action  that  is  used  to  accomplish”.
