Conclusion
The conclusion points out the major findings of the research. In addition, thischapter points out the limitation of this thesis.By adopting statistical methods, such as motion charts and PCA, this thesisconducts a qualitative analysis on the diachronic and synchronic variation of PTFs ofEnglish irregular verbs. The complex data lead to a number of results.Diachronically speaking, some tendencies are quite clear----the overall trend ofmost 31 English irregular verbs shows a preference to regularization whereas a fewverbs have swum against the mainstream. Analogical levelling is the main reasonresponsible for the major process of regularization. In other words, natural morphologydirects the evolution of irregular verbs in Modern English. In contrast, due to theirregular patterning in phonology, some verbs are irregularized by the process ofanalogical extension. In addition, patterning can be found certain regularity in irregularverbs either. Last but not least, when it comes to specific verb, if the race betweenanalogical levelling and analogical extension is one factor determining the trajectory ofchange, phonological similarity between verbs will another.Synchronically speaking, in terms of registers in general, irregular PTFs appearmore frequently in spoken English whereas regular PTFs are found more in writtenEnglish due to the formality of the registers. When it comes to more fine-grained texttypes from two registers, PCA visualizes subtle differences. First, W-books authors usePTFs the most frequently. Second, as far as written register is concerned, W-books andW-misc are the top two users of regular PTFs. In contrast, S-demo is the most commonuser of the irregulars. Finally, W-to-be-S is found to be a frequent user of the irregulars. In terms of individual irregular verb, differences are found in distribution.
