long the longhistory of dictionary-compilation, definition theories and approaches havemade great achievement , especially with the help of the modern linguistic theory. Inthis part, we will have a brief review on the studies on definition compiling.Before the 1970s, lexical item is considered to be a segment of the language anddefinition is a description of the lexical item in most the E-C dictionaries , so it needsto be highly abstract and generalized (Zhang Yihua , 2002). Under the influence ofstructuralism,which considers language as a semiotic system consisting of severalsections such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, the traditional definitionpattern does not integrate grammatical or syntactic forms with meaning , justdescribing the concept meaning of a lexical item by means of metalanguage. It seeksfor the equivalence of the concept and syntactic structure (Zhang Yihua , 1998).In the early 1960s, inspired by phonology , some linguists who believed themeaning of a word can be further divided into smaller parts adopted the componentialanalysis (CA) to definition (Melka Teichroew, F-J. 1989:163 cf: Zhang Yihua andHuang Qunying 2000). Kattz is one of the typical representatives. He and Fodor (1963)introduced the componential approach (CA) into semantics within generative grammar.In comparison with the traditional definition pattern,which only centers around theconceptual meaning of a word, Katz’s semantic theory began to influencelexicographers in a profound way. They came to recognize the collocational andgrammatical meaning in definition of a lexical item. Due to the impact of Katz’ssemantic theory on the traditional definition patterns ,We can notice that both semanticstructure and distribution structure are incorporated into the definition pattern in themodern dictionaries (Zhang Yihua and Yong Heming 2007: 268).

2.2 Studies on Thematic Roles and Argument Structures
One of the syntactic-semantic interfaces is the linking between thematic roles andsyntactic arguments. In this part, we will have a review of relevant studies on thematicroles and syntactic arguments.Gruber (1965) put forth the concept of thematic role in Studies in LexicalRelations. Ph.D.dissertation, MIT. Thereafter, in The Case for Case, Fillmore (1968)discussed the concept of semantic cases ,which is the same as that of thematic role.Both concepts express semantic entailment of verbs.Dowty (1991) put forward theconcept of thematic proto-roles:Proto-Agent and Proto-Patient , which in fact aremacro thematic roles. Based on different research objects, different scholars madedifferent generalization about thematic roles,the name and quantity of which are alsovaried. However, the basic thematic roles are the same.Afterwards, more and more researchers recognized the corresponding relationbetween thematic roles and argument structures and made many relevant researches onit. Andew Carnie (2002: 168-172) differentiated thematic relation from thematic role.Chomsky (1981) studied thematic theory and case theory in the theory of Governmentand Binding. Edwin Williams (1994) also studied the binding theory and thematictheory. Later, Jones (1988) discussed thematic relation in the binding point of view insyntax and considered thematic role as the semantic entailment of verbs.
