p;largest population  in  this  region.  Therefore,  choosing  the  pronunciation  samples  of Shenyang students can help to understand the real pronunciation situation of English learners  who  live  in  popular  cities  in  Northeast  China.  As  a  result,  this  thesis  can offer  some  useful  data  and  materials  to  other  phonetic  studies  on  English pronunciations in Northeast China. This  thesis  is  intended  to  study  the  features  of  Shenyang  English  learners’ pronunciation  of  vowels  and  consonants  by  analyzing  30  college  students’  reading materials  of  English  words,  and  these  students  are  all  from  Shenyang,  Liaoning Province.  Then  the  author  will  compare  the  pronunciation  features  of  Chinese English learners with those of American speakers.  This  thesis  will  analyze  the  20  vowels  and  24  consonants  produced  by Shenyang English learners. After  finding  out  the  features  of  English  vowels  and  consonants  produced  by Shenyang English learners, the author will explore the reasons for the deviations in their  pronunciation,  which  may  provide  reliable  data  for  the  English  teachers  in Shenyang  area,  who  can  adopt  effective  teaching  methods  to  help  their  students  to grasp standard English pronunciation.

Chapter 2 Literature Review 

In  this  chapter,  the  author  provides  the  basic  introduction  of  vowels  and consonants  respectively.  In  order  to  figure  out  whether  the  regional  accents  and dialects  can  make  a  difference  to  the  pronunciation  of  English  learners,  the  author also introduces accents and dialects as well as Shenyang accents and dialects, which might have an influence on learners’ English pronunciation. The author also reviews the previous studies on the acquisition of English vowels and consonants of Chinese students from different parts of China.

2.1 Vowels and Consonants 
Since  the  purpose  of  the  thesis  is  to  figure  out  the  pronunciation  features  of English vowels and consonants produced by Shenyang English learners, this section will provide the basic knowledge of vowels and consonants.
