idual’s  accent  is  just  his  way  of pronunciation,  which  can  help  the  listeners  get  to  know  some  inferred  information about the individual's regional and social background in their conversation.  In  addition,  accent  is  considered  to  be  a  traditional  term  for  “stress”  by  some phonologists  in  linguistics.  “The  syllable  or  syllables  of  a  word  which  stands  out from the remainder are said to be accented, to receive the accent.”(Alan Cruttenden, 2001:221)  According  to  the  Oxford  Advanced  Learner's  Dictionary  (1994:12),“accent  is  a  superior  force  of  voice  or  of  articulate  effort  upon  some  particular syllable of a word or a phrase, distinguishing it from the others.”Peter Roach (2003) also  defined  accent  as “ a  distinctive  pitch  movement  in  English  and  similar languages in which certain syllables are marked as distinctive or important by higher tone”.  To  some  extent,  accents  emphasize  the  prominent  syllable  in  a  word  or  a phrase.

Chapter 5 Data Analysis of the Vowels and Consonants produced by Shenyang English Learners 

This  chapter  will  present  the  pronunciation  features  of  20  vowels  and  24 consonants  respectively.  After  using  the  phonetic  software  Praat  to  annotate  the selected 28 words read by 30 Shenyang English learners (SELs), including 15 males and 15 females, and 10 American speakers (ASs), including 5 males and 5 females, the  author  can  summarize  Shenyang  English  learners’  common  pronunciation features of vowels and consonants and their deviations by comparing them with the data and sonagram features of American speakers.   

5.1 Pronunciation Features of Vowels
