Chapter IV Results and Discussion  

4.1 Characteristics of disfluent repetitions 

This  part  talks  about  characteristics  of  disfluent  repetitions  in  terms  of  frequency  and  type.   In addition, the following analysis is based on the numbers of repeated words.The total amount of words and disfluent repetitions produced by the 40 subjects were counted so as to get statistical support for the frequency of disfluent reptitions in this paper, which contains 10,915 words, including  472  fillers.   522  disfluent  repetitions  are  identified.   Therefore,  the  subjects  produce  47.83 disfluent repetitions every 1000 words.   This result is consistent with the existing research in general.  From the  table above, we can see that the disfluent  repetitions in English  majors’ oral production constitute a relatively high occurrence.   To be specific, among the 522 disfluent repetitions, there are 221 word  repetitions,  which  are  more  than  any  other  type  of  disfluent  repetitions,  covering  the  highest percentage (42.34%) of all the disfluent repetitions.   In addition, there are 126 clause/sentence repetitions, which  make  up  the  second  highest  percentage  (24.14%),  97  phrase  repetitions  (18.58%),  78  syllable repetitions (14.94%).

Conclusion

The  study  is  implemented  to  investigate  the  use  of  disfluent  repetitions  in  undergraduate  English majors’  oral  production  on  the  basis  of  a  minicorpus.   It  is  designed  to  respond  to  the  three  general research questions: the first one is concerned with the general characteristics of disfluent repetitions in oral production  made  by  undergraduate  English  majors;  the  second  one  is  related  to  the  relationship  between each  type  of  disfluent  repetitions;  the  third  one  is  involved  with  the  underlying  reasons  for  disfluent repetitions.   Based on data analysis, major findings are summarized in the following part.The general characteristics of self-repairs made by English majors in this study are discussed in terms of frequency and type.
